Surfing is a very popular pastime, so it is not surprising that many people desire to learn how to do it. Whether you have recently moved to a coastal area, or you are planning a beach vacation, you may be thinking about learning to surf. While experienced surfers may make the sport look simple, it actually takes a lot of skill. This is why surf lessons are highly recommended for all novice surfers. You are not likely to have success if you simply rent a surfboard and try to learn on your own. If you have scheduled surf lessons, use the following tips to help you prepare for the sessions:

Ensure That You're Physically Fit

You don't have to be a bodybuilder or a triathlete in order to learn to surf, but a certain level of physical fitness is required. Being a strong swimmer and being very confident swimming in the ocean is essential. If you do not know how to swim, or if you are a weak swimmer, put off your surf lessons until your swimming skills improve. It is very helpful to have relatively strong upper body strength, as you will need your upper body to go from laying on the surfboard to standing on it.

Understand Water Safety

Prior to your first surf lesson, it is in your best interest to do some research and learn as much as you can about water safety. One thing that you should focus on is learning about rip currents. Rip currents are common in all parts of the world and can be dangerous since they can pull a person out to sea. You should be able to identify what a rip current looks like and know how to safely escape from a rip current if you are caught in one.

Make Sure You Will Be Comfortable

In many areas, cold water temperatures mean that a wetsuit is needed in order to stay out in the water learning how to surf for an extended period of time. Before your surf lesson, ask if wetsuits are recommended for the location. Some companies that offer surf lessons may provide wetsuits, but if the company that you are using does not, they can tell you where you can rent one. You also need to make sure to put on an ample amount of sunscreen in advance of your surf lesson — you may feel cool while out in the waves, but it won't take long to become sunburned without sunscreen.
