Durable aluminum toolboxes can help secure and organize your tools on your work trailer. Before installing a box, learn about the different designs available so you can pick the one most suited to your needs and to your trailer.

Tongue Box

A tongue box can help you maximize all the available space on your trailer. These triangular boxes are designed to fit on the tongue, but they can only be used if the tongue isn't being utilized for storing propane tanks or a generator. For this reason, tongue boxes are great for many utility trailers and boat trailers, but they are usually not suitable for RVs or climate-controlled horse trailers. Further, make sure to check the weight limitations for your trailer's tongue to avoid overloading the box.

Underbody Box

If you haul a trailer behind a larger work truck, it is likely that the trailer is lifted so that it is level with the truck. If this applies to your trailer, then you have a bit of space on the underbody of your trailer that you may be able to use. Underbody toolboxes are designed to fit between the wheels. They are bolted to the underside of the trailer and typically have doors on the front that either swing or slide open. Just make sure the ones you choose won't interfere with the clearance needs of your trailer.

Internal Storage Box

An internal toolbox can be placed at the forward end of an open trailer or closed trailer. There are also internal boxes designed to fit over the wheel wells and make use of otherwise wasted space inside the trailer. These boxes can often carry heavier tools than those placed on a tongue or underbody since the contents must only fit within the entire trailer weight specifications. Not only will an internal box secure your tools, but it will also help keep them organized.

Step Box

If your trailer has fixed steps leading up to the back or to a side door, why not make them work double duty? Aluminum step storage boxes are made to fit two- or three-step trailer models. The top of each step is actually a lid that gives you access to the storage within. As an additional bonus, it isn't always obvious that the steps are also storage, which can help protect your expensive tools from would-be thieves.
